Kuala Lumpur Photo Diary
En route back to Macau, we decided to do a little side trip to Kuala Lumpur for a mere 2 days. Sorry for the lousy tee, I ran out of clothes to wear while we were there. The last decent outfit was taken at Changi airport back in Singapore. When we arrived in Malaysia, I didn't expect to get stared at for wearing a sheer shirt and short shorts. Last minute, I decided to change into a tee to blend in with the crowd (which is an understatement still). But you have to understand it's a Muslim country and women are expected to wear, if not traditional, conservative clothing. Besides, here was the chance to wear the "I heart SG" and "I heart Bangkok" tees that I bought while we were there (which I will unlikely do back in Macau, really).
So Kuala Lumpur - I find it a really interesting place. I'm amazed with its culture. I can't put to words whether it's actually a modern city or old-fashioned. You'll see people dressed up in long dresses, all black, covered from head to toe, and buildings resembling architectures that you might see in cartoon films like Aladdin, and then there are modern ones like the famous Petronas twin towers and the KL tower. At night, they shine brighter than the stars and you'll see them from every corner as you walk along the streets of the golden triangle, full of night clubs and open bars. At first, you'll never expect these things existed in a country where dating isn't a privilege or right (believe me, I heard a story of someone who got arrested for dating a Malay girl), or even just upon stepping foot onto the airport grounds and all you see around are trees, plains, fields, and well, just lots and lots of greens. But right at the heart of the city, there's a difference. Large luxury shopping malls dominate the spaces, you can't miss a brand. But on every corner outside you'll see hawkers and street stalls, the best Malaysian delicacies untainted and undiscovered. It's like east meets west; culture meets fashion; tradition meets liberation. That's where you'll see the true beauty of Kuala Lumpur. I can't tell you more as I won't make any sense (even I can't make out what I mean). You'll have to experience it for yourself.
Now, I leave you with the last set of our little Asia getaway. But like I said previously, I will be on the plane again the day after tomorrow, headed to Philippines so, expect more travel photos =)
Cheers, Carla
